Galaxy 3R

USA

Also called: Anik E2R

Launch data:

Designation: 23741 / 95069A
Launch date 15 Dec 1995
Launch site CC, LC-36A
Launch vehicle Atlas-2A (AC-120 #97)
Mission Telecommunications
Geostationary orbit 95°W
Mass at launch 3380 kg

Using a combination of digital compression and tightly focused spot beams, Galaxy 3R will used 24 Ku-band transponders to deliver as many as 144 channels of digital video and 60 channels of CD- quality audio via 24-inch (60 cm) dishes. The service was called Galaxy Latin America. In early 1998 the service was moved to Galaxy 8i.

A beam of the satellite was then moved to the US in order to extend the DirecTV programming.

C-band

Main transponders 24
Backup transponders 6
Power 16 W (SSPA)
Bandwidth 36 MHz
Coverage & EIRP max CONUS: 40 dBW
Alaska, Hawaii: 33 dBW
G/T max +2 dB/K (conus)
SFD -77 to -91 dBW/m²
Polarization linear H/V
Frequencies uplink: 5.925-6.425 GHz
downlink: 3.700-4.200 GHz

Strap-crossing: transponders 18 and 24 can be feed by the Ku-band transponders 17 and 23 respectively.

Ku-band

Main transponders 24
Backup transponders 6
Power 63 W (TWTA)
Bandwidth 16 transponders of 27 MHz (horizontal)
8 transponders of 54 MHz (vertical)
Coverage 2 beams (12 transponders each): North America
EIRP max 47 dBW
G/T max +3 dB/K (conus)
SFD -77 to -94 dBW/m²
Polarization linear H/V
Frequencies Uplink: 14.0 - 14.500 GHz
Downlink: 11.7-12.2 GHz

Downlink frequencies where switched from 11.450 - 11.750 GHz circular (with coverage to Latin America and Brazil on 2 beams) to 11.7-12.2 GHz linear (coverage to North America) sometime in Apr 1998 after Galaxy 8i went operational. It is unclear if the uplink frequencies also changed.

Strap-crossing: transponders 17 and 23 can be feed by the C-band transponders 18 and 24 respectively
